How we report on synthetic media — and the lines we never cross
← Back to front page

The rules

Never

We never host or link to sexual or intimate deepfakes of real people, under any circumstances, including for debunks.

Never

We never host deepfake media. No uploads, re-uploads or embeds. Story art is abstract placeholder imagery.

Only if

We link to originals only for newsworthy debunks, where seeing the source helps readers verify our findings or protect themselves. Links are marked "Watch the original" and open the post on the platform where it appeared.

Always

We credit our sources: researchers, fact-checkers, platforms and readers whose tips or analysis informed a story, unless a source asks to stay anonymous for their safety.

Labels we use

  • Verified fake means we confirmed the media is synthetic or manipulated.
  • Debunked means a claim attached to the media is false, for example satire passed off as real.
  • News means reporting about deepfakes, such as a scam bust, a new detection tool or research, where we aren't issuing a verdict on a specific clip.
  • Parody means the creator presents it as satire or parody; we note when that label is disputed or hard to see.
  • How it was spotted summarizes the evidence, so readers learn the technique.

Independence

Advertisers and affiliate partners have no say in what we cover or how we rate tools. Sponsored and partner placements are always labeled. See our affiliate disclosure.

Corrections

If we get something wrong, we fix it and add a dated note to the story explaining what changed. Spot an error? Email [email protected].
